Helpful Hints for Parents
Even though your child is in high school I'm sure that as a parent you are still interested in ways to help your student be more successful in school. One of the common criticisms I hear about CSCOPE is, "Don't they have a book to take home and study?" Since I will be implementing a "flipped" classroom, parents may have concerns about how their child can adapt to that environment sucessfully. I hope this page will offer some helpfull hints that aleviate some of those concerns.
My personal philosophy about literacy
Providing a quality education today is fundamentally different than it was a few decades ago. The reason is fairly simple - our world has changed. In order to prepare students for the world they live in today, we have to do things differently. If you are interested, read my blog entry, "Disruptive Technologies, Ivory Towers, and Literacy in Education"
Education is about learning. Learning happens within a student, it is not something we do to them. Learning is a process of making meaning that happens one student at a time. (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006)
Literacy/ comprehension strategies are methods students use to help them through the learning process. Literacy is not just about reading.
Literacy is the ability to construct knowledge from lessons and material presented in the classroom. It includes the ability of students to communicate new knowledge effectively. Being able to read and write well are strong components of literacy. Literacy strategies are tools to help students construct new knowledge. They help students to make sense of the endless stream of information that comes to them in their daily lives. These strategies are not just to help one make sense of written material; they apply to education and learning in general.
In the flipped classroom it will become the resposibility of the student to employ literacy strategies as they view the videos and perform the activities I assign to be done at home. They will certainly get instruction and guidance at school for what to do - but as a parent you know they don't always remember what we say.... The material on this page will allow you as the parent to know what we are trying to accomplish and reinforce our efforts at school.
